The Berlin Airlift monument at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force commemorates one of the greatest humanitarian efforts. It was one of the defining events of the Cold War. The 464-day effort to supply a city’s needs solely through the air demonstrated the resolve of democratic nations to oppose communist repression.

When the Soviet Union instituted a land and water blockage in order to take control of Germany, President Truman responded with an airlift to supply the 2.5 million citizens with food, fuel and medicine to help Berlin remain free. Thirty one Americans lost their lives in aircraft related accidents.
